Dr Maryanne Traylen and David Lay are Pavement Pounders.
We set upPavement Pounders as a Community Interested Company
in April 2010 as a vehicle for our Pride of Place Project
The Pride of Place Project
There are four strands to the project
Folkestone is proud of its festivals, vital to community life.
We integrated the Pride of Place project with both the 2011
Triennial and the Book Festival by devising and leading guided
walks and tours of the Triennial artworks. Between July and
November we led 8 such walks. All were oversubscribed.
The Creative Quarter and UCF campus are yet another source of
local pride. We ran 2 drawing with charcoal workshops at UCF
during the summer, part of our and UCF’s contribution to the
Triennial Fringe. The emphasis was on large communal drawings.
These workshops were attended by the public rather than artists
or art students. Their work was on show at UCF for several months.
We are collecting memories from residents and negotiating with
Academy FM to broadcast snippets. A knowledge of and involvement
with local history plays a big part in fostering Pride of Place.
We launched the first edition of our journal Transitions in
September which was strongly supported with contributions from
both established writers and locals. It is available from us
and at Folkestone Library. We are working on a second edition.
The Pride of Place Project has been part funded by Change East
